🐛 Teaching Tip from a Montessori Guide
Insect vocabulary is most powerful when connected to real observation—these flash cards work best as a reference tool during outdoor exploration. Before taking children outside, introduce 4-5 common insects they're likely to see: "This is a ladybug. It's small, round, and red with black spots. Let's see if we can find one in the garden!" After outdoor observation, return to the cards for naming and reinforcing vocabulary. Real photos are crucial for insect learning because children need to recognize actual insects, not cartoon versions. For older children (5-6), extend learning by discussing insect characteristics: "Which insects have wings? Which ones crawl instead of fly?" This bridges vocabulary into early classification and scientific thinking.
