🎯 How to Use 3-Part Cards
- Introduction: Present the picture cards first using the three-period lesson (see below)
- Matching work: Once your child knows the vocabulary, introduce the label cards and invite them to match labels to pictures
- Reading check: Use the picture-with-label cards as the control of error so your child can self-correct their matches
- Storage: Keep all three card types together in an envelope or small basket on the cultural studies shelf
- Extension: Invite your child to use the label cards to label real Hanukkah objects during the holiday
🕎 The Three-Period Lesson
Montessori teachers use the three-period lesson to introduce new vocabulary. Here's how to apply it with these cards:
Period One (Naming): Show your child 3 picture cards. Point to each and say the name clearly: "This is a menorah. This is a dreidel. This is gelt."
Period Two (Recognition): Ask your child to identify each object: "Can you show me the dreidel? Where is the menorah? Point to the gelt." Mix up the order and repeat several times.
Period Three (Recall): Point to each card and ask: "What is this?" If they answer correctly, they've mastered the vocabulary. If not, return to Period One.
🎓 Teaching Tip from a Montessori Guide
Don't rush to introduce all 10 sets at once. Start with 3 objects your child already has some familiarity with, then add new vocabulary gradually. The three-period lesson works best when it feels playful, not like a test. If your child seems tired or frustrated, stop and return to it later.
