🗺️ Setting It Up

• Print on cardstock, cut along the dotted guides, and laminate for repeated use

• Display the reference chart on the wall near your map work
• Extend the work by labeling the four walls of your classroom or school room and asking the child which direction the window faces

Using the Three Period Lesson

Begin with two or three picture cards only. Name each one clearly, then move to "show me north" and stay in that playful recognition stage far longer than feels necessary. Only when the child is pointing confidently do you ask, "What is this?" Rushing the third period is the most common reason direction vocabulary does not stick, and the included guide walks you through each stage.

🎓 Teaching Tip for a Montessori Guide

Before the cards ever come out, take the child outside in the morning and have them face the sunrise. That is east. Now their right hand is south, and their left hand is north. Direction learned through the body stays learned. The cards then become a way of recording something the child already knows, rather than an abstraction they are asked to memorize.
