Early readers can practice decoding beginning consonant blends with these Name the Objects cards, a printable PDF designed for children ages 4 to 7 working through the Montessori Blue Series. Each card pairs one real photograph with three similar words, and the child reads carefully to find the word that names the object.

📦 What's Included

  • 30 word choice cards featuring real photographs of familiar objects such as crab, drum, sled, plum, prism, skunk, stump, and blimp
  • Beginning blends printed in red so the child's eye goes straight to the target sound
  • 8 pages of cards formatted for easy cutting, four cards per page

💡 Learning Benefits

  • Strengthens decoding of beginning consonant blends like br, cl, dr, fl, pl, st, and tr
  • Builds careful, complete reading since the word choices differ by only one or two letters
  • Grows vocabulary through real photographs instead of illustrations
  • Supports independence because the child can check each word against the picture

🎯 How to Use

  • Print, laminate, and cut the cards, then present a small stack on a tray
  • The child reads all three words aloud, then marks the correct word with a clothespin, glass gem, or pencil
  • Offer 6 to 8 cards at a time and rotate the rest to keep shelf work fresh
  • Pair with the moveable alphabet by inviting the child to build the correct word after reading it

A quick note on the design: some word choices are not real words on purpose. This encourages children to decode every letter instead of guessing from the first sound, which builds true reading accuracy.

And a tip from my classroom: resist the urge to correct mid-read. When a child chooses the wrong word, simply invite them to read all three choices aloud once more. The picture acts as the control of error, and the discovery belongs to the child.
